Unable to program Blinky POV

Postby itzafish » Sun Feb 05, 2012 12:40 am

I purchased the Blinky POV thru Maker Shed as a Christmas gift for my granddaughter to be a project we could work on together. The assembly went well. The Blinky shows the messages Maker Shed, Maker Fair, and Hello which had been programmed previously. So far I have been unable to reprogram any message. I have tried using my laptop, our desktop with a CRT display set to max brightness in a dark room. I am using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. Here are the results I get when I tried different delay settings:

40 ms Appears to be programming OK, but when it finishes, the 1st and 3rd LEDs are blinking.

80 ms Appears to be programming OK, but when it finishes, the 1st and 2nd LEDs are on solid.

120 ms Appears to be programming OK, but when it finishes, the 1st LED is out and the 2nd is on solid.

The sensors are on the back side of the board and I have verified that the large piece of metal is oriented towards the middle of the board.

Additionally, after turning the unit on it reads Maker Fair from there after the first button push it reads Maker Shed, the second push it LEDs 1 thru 6 are on solid, the third push HELLO, the fourth LEDs 1 thru 8 are on solid, the fifth LEDS 1thru 8 go into a back and forth chase sequence, and the sixth it again reads Maker Shed.

We would appreciate any assistance you can provide in resolving this programming issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there, sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the programming of your blinky POV. Have you checked out our cool new animated guide to programming?

If you re-do the programming at 40ms, 80ms, or 120ms, does it have the exact same end behavior each time? For example, with 120ms, is the second LED always the only one lit, or does it sometimes have no LEDs lit at the end?

Do you have a smartphone like an iphone or ipad or android device you could use to test it out?

If you can take some high-resolution digital photos of both sides of your circuit board, and close-ups of the sensors if you can, that'd be great. Feel free to send us a message via the contact form if you still can't get it to work.

I used the contact form to submit the results of running the programming 3 times for each of the delays of 40 ms, 80 ms, and 120 ms. My name on the contact form is James Overholt and the email address is joverhol@swcp.com. I am unsure how to include the pictures of the assembled Blinky POV as you requested in your response, since I can't seem to paste the jpg's into the contact form or into this document. I suspect it is something obvious that I should know how to do but I currently am at a loss. Please let me know how to accomplish it.

Thanks for your help
