It's a 3mm LED-like package of the TEPT4400 made by Vishay Semiconductors. Here are the

Digikey product pages.
They act like light-sensitive resistors, where they have very low resistance when exposed to a bright light up close, and have a higher resistance when it's dark (I may have that reversed, check the datasheet). We form a simple resistor-divider with the light sensor and a 10k resistor, connected like this:
Vdd ------ light sensor ----- analog input pin ----- resistor ---- ground
